  SAN JUAN - ARGENTINA

In January 2004 STRACON was invited to participate in the planning and management of the inaugural Winter Operations associated with the access road for Barrick Gold's Veladero Mine, located in the San Juan province of Argentina.

This lineal contract provided the challenges of operating in remote areas in extreme weather and geographical conditions, with altitudes up to 5,000 metres above sea level. The 160 km access road was the lifeline and critical path to the successful construction and operation of the Veladero mine, which commenced gold production in the fourth quarter of 2005.

The project scope included the selection, procurement and management of resources to enable consistent safe access along the road, including the construction of fixed infrastructure along the route. Activities under the management of STRACON consisted of routine maintenance of the compacted gravel road, snow removal, avalanche control, traffic and logistical management and emergency response.

Development and implementation of site specific safe operating procedures utilizing the STRACON Management System were a priority. Budget preparation, operating cost and contract management are a fundamental aspect of meeting our client's objective of safely and cost effectively managing the mine access road throughout the year.

In December 2004, Barrick awarded STRACON a three year contract to provide expanded services at Veladero, including all routine maintenance of the mine access road and management of associated winter operations.
